Days 345, 346 & 347 – Tuesday 2nd, Wednesday 3rd & Thursday 4th May 2017

Getting settled in South Africa…
First let me start by pointing out the fact that we didn’t fancy taking our cameras out in Johannesburg hence the fact that post doesn’t include any photographs. Also it might be the last post for quite a while, but you’ll see why eventually!

Day 345 – Tuesday 2nd May 2017
Today was about one thing and one thing only – sorting ourselves out.
We took an Uber to Rosebank Mall at around midday and picked up a new memory card for the GoPro, along with a South African sim card and a cheap mobile phone in case of emergency.
For lunch we stopped at Mike’s Kitchen and had our first taste of South African food in form of Chakalaka (a spicy vegetable relish), before grabbing a few microwave meals for dinner and then returning to our Airbnb.
It wasn’t a particularly fun day, but one that we had to get over and done with. Besides, with everything out of the way we had ourselves set up for two more days of actually enjoying ourselves (you know, instead of just getting a bunch of boring jobs done)!

Day 346 – Wednesday 3rd May 2017
Today we dedicated our entire day to visiting the Johannesburg Apartheid Museum.
As the name suggests, the museum illustrates the rise and fall of apartheid in South Africa. It took us nearly three hours to walk around, a third of which we spent at the Mandela Exhibition, a temporary exhibition dedicated to Nelson Mandela.
In the evening we visited a restaurant called Hell’s Kitchen as suggested by a friend of my brother. We shared the lamb burger and rack of baby back ribs between us, with salad and sweet potato wedges on the side, washed down with a couple of Black Label beers, which are apparently a favourite amongst locals here. What a reccomendation!
From Hell’s Kitchen it was only a two minute walk back to our Airbnb but it was dark outside so we took an Uber just to be safe, then went straight to sleep. We’ll, I guess you could say it was more of a food coma than just sleep, but never mind.

Day 347 – Thursday 4th May 2017
Today we took a ride on the Johannesburg Sightseeing Bus, which started at Constitution Hill, visited ten stops in total, and lasted nearly four hours.
Stops along the way included the Mining District, Carlton Centre, James Hall Transportation Museum, Apartheid Museum, SAB WOB (South African Breweries World of Beer), Newton Junction, Origins Centre and Braamfontein, and by taking the Sightseeing Bus we not only saw a lot more than we would have on foot, but felt a lot safer too.
For me the highlight of our day was taking the elevator up to the 50th floor of the Carlton Center, the tallest skyscraper on the continent, which is otherwise known as ‘The Top of Africa’.
For dinner we visited 27 Boxes, a shopping made up entirely of shipping containers, then headed back to get our things together ahead of checking out in the morning. Usually we’d just be lazy and pack in the morning, but with our alarms set for 04:45 that wasn’t an option really!

Welcome to the country of my birth Abbie and Dan. Enjoy your visit to the most beautiful country in Africa! Be safe out there though…you’re not in Kansas anymore!

  2. Great you made it to South Africa, you saved the best for last – truly a world in one country. We lived in Jo’burg for a year back in the early 90’s. And to this day we say it was the best year of our lives. We last visited two years ago, but left Jo’burg after just a day. I’m amazed that Carlton Center is still open. Save travels and amazing sights!
